A Melbourne man has been charged with more than 130 offences after he allegedly worked as an unlicensed security guard.

The 27-year-old from Berwick has been charged with 67 counts of possessing a handgun without a licence, 67 counts of acting as a security guard without a licence, and two counts of using and attempting to use a false document, police say.

The company the man worked for had its corporate firearm and private security business licences suspended as police began investigating in March.

The man will appear in a court on November 8.

"Private security businesses providing services are responsible for ensuring that any individuals they employ are the holders of appropriately endorsed and valid licences," police said in an earlier statement.

"Businesses who fail to do so could face charges."
