Man in hospital in critical condition after jumping out of a moving taxi

A Melbourne man has life-threatening injuries after apparently trying to jump out of a moving taxi without paying.

He was one of two men who were picked up by the taxi in Fitzroy North just after 1am and driven to Northcote.

Police say both men tried to get out of the cab while it was moving.

One fell onto the road and was badly injured.

The driver failed to stop.

Police are asking for witnesses to come forward.
