Vic murder accused 'jealous': magistrate

A man accused of murdering an ex-girlfriend in Melbourne was allegedly jealous she was having sex with someone new.

Alexander Freeburn, 29, appeared before Melbourne Magistrates' Court via video link on Monday charged with murdering Elizabeth Wilms in 2016.

Freeburn is also charged with assaulting another man after allegedly becoming jealous of his sexual relationship with Ms Wilms.

"The accused was jealous of the relationship," magistrate Charlie Rozencwajg said.

Ms Wilms' body was found in a Kew property on July 5, 2016.

Freeburn was not charged with her murder until March this year.

He is accused of murdering Ms Wilms at the home between June 30 and July 5, according to court documents.

"The prosecution case rests on the CCTV footage, which they say is evidence that there was nobody else there," Mr Rozencwajg said.

The defence says there is a three-hour window where there is no CCTV footage available.

Four witnesses, including the man Freeburn is accused of assaulting, are scheduled to give evidence at a three-day contested committal hearing that will determine whether the 29-year-old should stand trial.

Freeburn has been remanded into custody until September 6.
