Vic magistrate has licence suspended

A Victorian magistrate had his driver's licence suspended.

The unnamed magistrate will be off the road for six months but can continue to preside in court, according to a statement from the chief magistrate.

"A Victorian magistrate has exceeded a demerit point limit ... and his licence has been suspended for a period of six months," Chief Magistrate Peter Lauritsen said in a statement on Wednesday.

"The magistrate is deeply embarrassed and sorry for what has occurred."

Mr Lauritsen said he had discussed the suspension with the magistrate, and remained "confident that he can continue to discharge his duties as a magistrate".

The statement does not identify the magistrate or reveal the driving offences involved.

News Corp Australia reports that Bendigo-based magistrate David Faram has temporarily lost his licence.
