No more jail time for killer Vic mother

A Melbourne mother who killed her violent lover with a piece of broken glass has been released.

Lisa Jane McLaughlin, 50, pleaded guilty to manslaughter after stabbing Graham Stevens, 31, once in the back during a fight in Seaford in September 2014.

Justice Terry Forrest handed her a two-year community corrections order and 537 days jail on Friday, time she has already served.

McLaughlin's actions on September 21, 2014 were the product of anger, in the face of emotional and physical abuse, he said.

Both McLaughlin, of Noble Park, and Mr Stevens were regularly using the drug ice during their ill-fated and volatile relationship.

In what would be their final fight, Mr Stevens hit and kicked her before throwing a piece of glass tubing at her, which broke, the Supreme Court of Victoria heard.

McLaughlin picked up a piece of the broken tube and struck him once in the upper back, later telling police she was angry and "went back at him".

The single wound punctured well into Mr Stevens' right lung and he died shortly afterward.

"You were the victim of a sustained physical assault carried out by a man almost 20 years your junior," Justice Forrest told McLaughlin.

"You were entitled to be angry, you were entitled to be distressed, but you were not entitled to stab him."

McLaughlin met Stevens when her life spiralled out of control following the death of her youngest son, Zane, five, in a boating accident in 2008.

Her two-year community-based order will require her to complete 100 hours of unpaid work, mental health treatment, and drug and alcohol rehabilitation.

McLaughlin had no relevant criminal history and had shown remorse, the court heard.
