Vic locals stop drunk driver from fleeing

A drunk man who crashed his car and tried to flee on foot in Melbourne has been held under citizens arrest by some brave locals.

A 30-year-old Dandenong man was prevented from driving away by members of the public after he crashed on Potter Street in Dandenong at 1pm on Thursday.

When police arrived, the man fled on foot but was caught a short time later in a nearby block of flats.

Senior Constable Gavin Devine was impressed by the tenacity of the locals.

"We're enormously lucky that no one was injured during the collision and police would like to thank all those who prevented him driving again," he said.

The driver was found to be driving on a disqualified international drivers licence, and had a blood alcohol content of 0.224, more than four times the legal limit.

The man is expected to be charged with a range of traffic offences including driving whilst disqualified, drink driving, careless driving and leaving the scene of an accident.

His car was impounded for 30 days.
