Fire crews have extinguished a fire that started in a feed silo of a livestock ship off the Victorian coast a week ago.

Emergency crews were called to the livestock carrier in Portland, on Victoria's southwest coast, last Tuesday night.

A silo filled with 800 tonnes of pelletised stock feed caught fire on the ship, which had no livestock on board at the time.

Crews will remain in the area until all fodder has been removed.

Country Fire Authority incident controller Mark Gunning said once the pellets had been unloaded they would be transported to an approved holding facility.

The Port of Portland operations have not been affected by the fire and business continues as normal.
