Abetz says media misreported on Mantach

Senator Eric Abetz has accused the media of "misreporting" how much he knew about disgraced former Victorian Liberal Party director Damien Mantach's time at the Tasmanian branch.

Mr Mantach is under investigation by the Victoria Police fraud and extortion squad over allegations he stole $1.5 million from the Liberals over four years.

Senator Abetz was drawn into the saga following comments from Liberal colleague and Tasmanian premier Will Hodgman.

Mr Hodgman said he and Senator Abetz were told in 2008 that Mr Mantach had to repay almost $48,000 to the Tasmanian branch when he left the state to come to Victoria.

"I am not going to comment any further other than it was a state organisation matter in 2008 and it remains a state organisation matter in 2015," Senator Abetz told reporters in Melbourne on Wednesday.

"There are assertions on how much I knew. There has been misreporting on that."

Clearly annoyed by the line of questioning in relation to Mr Mantach, the senator ended the press conference abruptly before rushing off to his vehicle parked nearby.

The Liberal party recouped $450,000 selling Mr Mantach's share portfolio, but has chosen not to sell his family home.

State president Michael Kroger said the final amount could change once police investigations were complete.
