East West Link will never happen: Vic govt

The Victorian government insists it will never resurrect the dumped East West Link even though its infrastructure advisers reportedly back the project.

The government dumped the project last year at a cost of $1.1 billion, but a report from Infrastructure Victoria, leaked on Wednesday, suggests the link is a priority, according to News Corp Australia.

Treasurer Tim Pallas says the All Things Considered report, due to be released on Thursday, does not list the East West Link as a priority project.

"When Infrastructure Victoria says its priority and economic value are low, I think it really just sustains the point that this government made the right decision when we ceased that project," he told reporters in Ballarat.

The government says the report is a discussion paper that outlines a broad range of options, some of which are not sustainable or viable for Victoria.

Opposition leader Matthew Guy says the premier is ignoring important advice about the state's future.

"Daniel Andrews' own body, Daniel Andrews' own infrastructure advisors, are saying `build the East West Link'," he told reporters in Melbourne.

"It's time he got that message and listened to the advice he's been given."

In December, a scathing report by the Victorian auditor-general criticised both the Andrews and Napthine governments for their handling of the East West link project.

The report found the former Liberal Napthine government had rushed the contract ahead of the 2014 election without adequate planning and preparation.

It also found Labor failed to conduct sufficient checks as to whether the project was worth keeping before cancelling the contract.
