Four men are facing a string of charges following a Melbourne jewellery store robbery in which display cabinets were smashed with mallets and valuables stuffed into bags in front of customers.

The heist took place on Tuesday morning at Westfield Plenty Valley in Mill Park.

The four were arrested over the robbery and the theft of a black BMW SUV, police say.

As a result, a 25-year-old appeared in Melbourne Magistrates Court charged over the robbery on Friday and was remanded to reappear on June 8.

A 27-year-old charged with stealing a car and handling stolen goods was bailed to appear in Heidelberg Magistrates Court on August 4.

A 21-year-old also charged with car theft and other unrelated matters will face the same court on April 13, while a 19-year-old will answer to car theft and driving offences before Heidelberg court on June 28.

Detectives are still looking for a fifth man in relation to the robbery.
