Vic ice user jailed over fatal shooting

A Victorian ice addict has been jailed for 11 years over the "pointless" shooting death of a man.

Werribee man Harley Munt, 23, shot Zebulon Harris through the shoulder after confronting him outside a Hoppers Crossing house in August last year.

Victorian Supreme Court Justice Paul Coghlan said on Wednesday the shooting was pointless and unnecessary and that it was beyond belief somebody would fire a gun at someone in the dark.

"It is the world of the methylamphetamine addiction, it is a world I do not understand," Justice Coghlan said on what would have been Mr Harris' 30th birthday.

He said there was no explanation for what happened the night Mr Harris died.

Munt had been using methylamphetamine and playing the pokies when he was asked to help retrieve his friend's van, which they thought Mr Harris had stolen.

He'd bought a gun about three months earlier, after he began dealing drugs.

Munt pleaded guilty to the 29-year-old father's manslaughter.

Justice Coghlan said he was satisfied Munt was trying to overcome his drug addition and was remorseful.

"This case demonstrates the danger of drugs, methylamphetamine in particular and the danger of firearms," Justice Coghlan said.

"The danger of each is clear. The combination of them both is now often seen to be fatal and in the most inexplicable circumstances."

Justice Coghlan sentenced Munt to 11 years prison with a non-parole period of eight years.

Munt has served 420 days of pre-sentence detention.
