A man jailed for the 2011 hit-run death of a cyclist has admitted to killing another man the day before the collision.

Daniel Veerman, 37, pleaded guilty to the manslaughter of Kyal Scanlon at Olinda, on Melbourne's eastern outskirts, on March 7, 2011.

He appeared in the Victorian Supreme Court on Thursday where he was due to stand trial for the murder of Mr Scanlon.

The crown withdrew the charge of murder and Veerman entered a plea of guilty to manslaughter.

No details of the crime were given.

Veerman was jailed in 2011 over the death of a 45-year-old cyclist who was run over in Ringwood on March 8 that year.

The cyclist died in hospital two days later and the car involved was later found burned out in a hotel car park.

Veerman's defence barrister on Thursday said his client had served his minimum jail term for the hit-run death and would have been eligible to apply for parole if not for the charges relating to Mr Scanlon.

The family and friends of Mr Scanlon cried in the court as Veerman entered his plea.

A plea hearing date is yet to be set.
