Vic killer hit-run driver back behind bars

Thomas Towle, who killed six Victorian teenagers in a hit-run crash near Mildura nine years ago, is back behind bars after allegedly breaching his parole.

It's believed Towle was arrested in Bendigo on Tuesday morning after his parole was cancelled by the Adult Parole Board on Monday.

Towle, now 44, was found guilty in 2008 of six counts of dangerous driving causing death after his car ploughed into a group of 13 teenagers, killing six of them, as they were leaving a 16th birthday party at Cardross in February 2006.

The victims killed were Shane Hirst, 16, his 17-year-old sister Abby Hirst, Stevie-Lee Weight, 15, and Cassandra Manners, Cory Dowling and Josephine Calvi, all aged 16.

Towle fled the scene, leaving his injured pre-schooler son in the car, before later handing himself to police. He was sentenced to 10 years' jail with a minimum of seven years.

Towle was released from prison in June 2013 with strict conditions including a ban from driving and drinking alcohol, or entering Mildura.

An Adult Parole Board spokeswoman confirmed Towle's parole was cancelled on Monday.

She said the parole was cancelled "due to non-compliance with conditions and an escalation of risk to the community".

The spokeswoman would not say which parole conditions it's alleged Towle breached but said he had committed no new offences.

A Victoria Police spokeswoman said a 44-year-old man was arrested after police executed a warrant at an address in Bendigo at 7.20am on Tuesday because of a breach of parole.

He is now in custody.

It is not clear where Towle is being held or whether he is due to appear in court.

It's likely Towle's jail sentence will be extended, with the Adult Parole Board to decide if part of his time outside prison be counted as time served.

He must apply for it to be considered and must re-apply for parole before he will be released from custody.
