Victorians are warned to brace for the last burst of summer as a week-long heatwave brings temperatures up to 40C in some parts.

Bureau of Meteorology duty forecaster Stephen King says northern Victoria is expected to be the hardest hit, with temperatures in the high 30s and low 40s until Saturday, with no cool change on the horizon.

Melbourne can expect humid conditions and temperatures in the mid 30s.

Mr King said while temperatures are well above average for the time of year, the length of the heatwave is more significant.

"It's a typical summer pattern a week or two into autumn - it's the last burst of summer," he told AAP on Sunday.
