Vic greyhound numbers down 30 per cent

Victoria says it's cut greyhound breeding numbers by a third in a year and criticised the "knee jerk" industry ban in NSW and subsequent "monumental backflip".

Agriculture Minister Jaala Pulford said Victoria's sober approach had delivered results compared to the NSW government's aborted ban.

"They're just all over the shop on this," Ms Pulford told reporters on Tuesday.

"(NSW) responded in a knee jerk way, announced a ban and here we are what feels like five minutes later with a monumental backflip."

NSW Premier Mike Baird held a cabinet meeting on Tuesday where he agreed to reverse a controversial greyhound racing ban announced just three months ago.

Ms Pulford says Victoria has spent a year implementing the recommendations of two reviews into the sport.

"Breeding numbers for greyhounds in Victoria is down around 30 per cent in just one year," she said.

"We were confident that we could clean up greyhound racing in Victoria.

"NSW - it feels like today they're back to square one."
