Vic greyhound adoption facilities expanded

Victoria's racing minister has opened a new 50-kennel facility to help more ex-racing greyhounds find a home.

Martin Pakula on Wednesday unveiled the facility in Mount Mercer which will be used to assess whether dogs are suitable for Greyhound Racing Victoria's adoption program.

Over the past 20 years the project has overseen 7000 adoptions with almost 900 greyhounds successfully rehomed in 2015/16.

The Victorian government has also announced $85,000 in funding for the nearby Morshead Park track in Ballarat to upgrade a function centre and playground.

The boost to the Victorian industry comes as NSW moves to shut down its greyhound racing.

The Mike Baird government announced three months ago it would be banning the sport from next year after a report found widespread evidence of animal cruelty.

A Greyhounds Transition Taskforce is consulting with the greyhound racing industry and will then recommend a support package to help it shut down in NSW by July 2017.
