Vic Govt TAFE enrolments down 33 per cent

Government-subsidised enrolments at Victorian TAFEs dropped by a third in one year, data shows.

The number of students in apprenticeships and traineeships was also down 40 per cent since the previous government's 2012 VET reforms.

A report from the Department of Education and Training showed there was a 29 per cent decline in people aged 15-19 in government-funded training.

The number of government subsidised enrolments by TAFEs dropped by 33 per cent over a year, from 207,943 in 2013 to 139,182 in 2014.

Training Minister Steve Herbert said the report was evidence the previous government's changes to the TAFE funding model had been disastrous for the sector.

"This is bad news for individuals, for our economy, and for employers who rely on skilled workers," Mr Herbert said.

"There is no quick-fix, but the Andrews Labor Government's $320 million TAFE Rescue Fund is saving the campuses on the brink, supporting more students and creating more jobs.

Enrolments in private TAFE providers increased from 2012 to 2014, but numbers overall declined.
