Vic govt scrutinising toll road proposal

The Victorian government might not go ahead with the proposed Western Distributor toll road if the project doesn't stack up.

The government says the dumped East West Link is in Victoria's past, and it will focus on scrutinising the Western Distributor proposal.

Treasurer Tim Pallas announced the government paid $420 million to get out of the East West Link contract, with $339 million spent by the consortium on design and pre-construction expenses and $81 million spent setting up a credit facility.

"While not a cause for celebration, it allows Victorians to move forward and focus on the projects that stack up," Mr Pallas said on Monday.

The treasurer said the government was now focused on getting the best deal on Transurban's $5.5 billion Western Distributor project.

"We have to scrutinise this, we have to negotiate to make sure we get the best value and we may well not proceed with it if we do not get value for money," he said.
