Vic govt purges 18 training providers

Dodgy Victorian training colleges are being shut down at a rate of one every three weeks with the state government trying to claw back $41 million in funding.

More than 60 registered training organisations have been investigated since July last year and 18 have been shut down.

The Victorian government said on Thursday it had earmarked $41 million for recovery from providers.

A further $9 million is being withheld from those currently under investigation.

The purge is a key recommendation of a review last year into the state's vocational education and training system.

Colleges have been shut down for reasons including lodging claims for training that never took place, offering students incentives to sign up and sub-contracting training without authorisation.

Victoria will spend an extra $30 million over three years to more closely scrutinise the activities of third-party training colleges.

A new VET funding model will be introduced next year.
