Vic flags law changes after Masa death

The Victorian government owes it to the family of a murdered Melbourne schoolgirl to improve public safety, Premier Daniel Andrews says.

Masa Vukotic, 17, was stabbed to death in a park near her home on March 17 and a man has been charged with her murder.

Premier Daniel Andrews has held talks with his attorney-general and police minister to consider the government's response to the crime.

"We owe it to the families involved in a tragedy like this one. And if there are things we can learn, if there are things that need improving well, then we need to make sure we do that work," he told journalists.

"I want every victim to know that we will honour the memory of that poor girl and her family while learning all the lessons to keep Victorians safe."

Masa's death has prompted an outpouring of grief in her local community and a floral memorial has been set up at her murder scene.

Friends have described the Canterbury Girls' Secondary College student as a "loving, sweet, smart" young woman with a zest for life and a bright future.

Her funeral will be held at the Springvale Botanical Cemetery's Boyd Chapel on Thursday.
