When it comes to fisherman's tales, Victorian angler Dan Hoey sweeps the competition away.

The Port Fairy fishing charter owner fended off a five-and-a-half metre white shark with a broom on a recent expedition.

"(S)he nearly took a chunk out of my Yamaha motors, leaving a few small dents and scratches," he wrote on his Salty Dog Fishing Charters Facebook page.

In footage posted to YouTube, the shark repeatedly comes up to the boat, attempting to bite the motor, and a red garden broom pushes it away.

Mr Hoey thinks the shark was probably pregnant.

"Spring heading into summer is acknowledged as pupping and Bass Strait is considered the pupping ground for the eastern seaboard population," he wrote.

"This shark looks to be on the verge of dropping her bundles of joy very soon."
