Controversial Vic CFA deal close

A controversial deal for Victorian firefighters could go ahead despite the CFA's objections, with a cabinet sub-committee approving it on Friday.

The sub-committee met on Friday afternoon and is understood to have agreed on a pay deal between the CFA and the United Firefighters Union.

The deal includes a "consultation clause" the CFA believes effectively hands the union a veto over management decisions.

Fair Work Commissioner Julius Roe came down on the side of the union in a hearing and issued non-binding findings on Wednesday.

A government spokesman said the government was still considering Fair Work's recommendations.

Several sources said the sub-committee had approved the deal and it would go to cabinet on Monday.

The CFA board is due to meet on Monday to consider the recommendations, but the government's decision could already be made by the time they meet.

Speaking in San Francisco on Friday, Premier Daniel Andrews said the recommendations were being examined to get a fair and balanced outcome.

"We value and (have) appropriate regard to our career firefighters but also fundamentally respect the work, the contribution, the passion, the commitment of our volunteer firefighters," Mr Andrews told reporters.

Emergency Services Minister Jane Garrett has strongly opposed the deal, which she has previously said would hand too much power to the union.

The CFA board and chief executive are also strongly opposed to the deal and it's understood they will refuse to sign it.
