KEY RECOMMENDATIONS FROM THE VICTORIAN ROYAL COMMISSION INTO FAMILY VIOLENCE:
FEDERAL RECOMMENDATIONS
- Victoria should ask COAG to expand the funding of legal services in family law.
- COAG should consider establishing a Medicare service for family violence.
- Lobby federal attorney-general for family law reforms which address jurisdictional loopholes.
- Victoria should develop, with COAG, a single database for family violence, child protection and family law orders across the states, territories, and the Commonwealth
- Ensure the NDIS can identify family violence and respond to it.
VICTORIA RECOMMENDATIONS
- 17 "support and safety hubs" so victims can access help in one place.
- A centralised database led by Victoria Police for sharing information about risky cases and perpetrators across agencies
- More funding for specialist family violence support services
- More programs to help victims return home safely
- Set up perpetrator intervention services
- Phase out communal refuges and replace with private units
- Fund intervention and counselling for children
- Introduce respectful relationship education programs in Victorian schools
- Speed up child protection workers' responses to reports of family violence
- Increase the frequency of police monitoring of contraventions of family violence intervention orders
- Develop a new way for police to manage and report family violence
- Trial police body-worn cameras to collect statements and evidence from incidents
- Consider expanding police powers so they can issue intervention orders in the field
- Introduce legislation to ensure family violence matters are heard in specialist family violence courts
