Vic emergency database is secure: ESTA

The emergency services database containing the personal details of thousands of Victorians can not been breached by hackers, according to the organisation responsible for overseeing the emergency services communications system.

The Emergency Services Telecommunications Authority (ESTA) says the personal details of thousands of Victorians, taken by Ambulance Victoria, the Country Fire Authority and the State Emergency Service, are secure.

Responding to a report that there was a security breach which allowed the database to be accessible to hackers, ESTA says that is not possible.

"It's on a secure, private network and the only way to access it is if you have special logins, and any logging in is recorded," ESTA head of corporate affairs Rosie Mullaly said on Friday.

But she said the short messages sent by emergency services to crews who attend scenes were sent on an analogue network, which could be monitored by the public if they have certain equipment.

"There are instances where people do tap into that and then they monitor what the messages are," Ms Mullaly said.

"When any of the authorities are aware of that, those people, if they track them, are told to cease and desist," she said.
