Vic drink-driver should have been isolated

A drink-driver who crashed into a shopfront in Melbourne's eastern suburbs was supposed to be self-isolating after returning from overseas.

The 23-year-old Deepdene man drove into the Balwyn North property at about 5am on Wednesday and returned a positive breath test at the scene, Victoria Police said.

The man, who is understood to have returned from overseas 13 days ago, was taken to Box Hill Hospital with minor injuries.

He will be interviewed in relation to both the crash and his failure to comply with the mandatory 14-day quarantine for returning travellers.

Individuals flouting the rule can be fined $1652 on the spot.

Speaking in Melbourne on Wednesday, Premier Daniel Andrews warned against breaking self isolation directives.

"If you break the rules, then there are very significant penalties because if these rules aren't followed, people will die. It's as simple as that," he said.
