The Victorian arm of the Country Women's Association has dropped its knitting needles and raised a fist for same-sex marriage.

The Victorian chapter of the women's group, known for its baking and crafts, was the first in Australia to vote in favour of same-sex marriage at a state conference at the weekend.

"It is a very progressive organisation and it has always been at the cutting edge of some of the censorship issues of life," Victorian president Machelle Crichton said at the conference.

The group will now write to the government to voice their support and urge them to legislate.

The Victorian CWA was formed in 1928 and has over 5600 members.
