Vic violence victims 'confident to report'

Family violence victims are feeling more confident to come forward as Victorian reports have almost doubled in four years.

The latest crime statistics show there were 70,906 family violence reports in 2014-15, up from 40,733 in 2010-11.

"Very clearly there is a growing confidence obviously over the last number of years in relation to reporting family violence," Police Minister Wade Noonan told reporters on Thursday.

"We want people to have the confidence to come forward and report."

Deputy Commissioner Wendy Steendam said the jump in family violence reports also meant the number of intervention orders being issued and breached had increased.

Drug dealing and trafficking charges are also up 20 per cent on the previous financial year.

"The data in the drug-related categories is actually about proactive police activity," Ms Steendam said.

She said ice use was contributing to thefts, robberies and burglaries, especially in regional areas.

For the first time, the statistics counted the demographic characteristics of offenders and victims.

"Over the last year we have seen a four per cent drop in the number of victims under 25, with the greatest change seen amongst 15 to 19-year-old victims, who dropped by eight per cent," Crime Statistics Agency chief statistician Fiona Dowsley said.

The number of offenders under 25 went down 4.2 per cent compared to last year, but those offenders were involved in more incidents on average compared to the rest of the offending population.

Opposition Leader Matthew Guy said total crime was up 4.6 per cent but the government had not committed to training any new police officers.

"If crime is growing along with population, we should be increasing police numbers," Mr Guy told reporters.

The Victorian Crime Statistics Agency has taken over responsibility for delivering regular statistics updates from Victoria Police.

- Total offences 469,830, up 4.6 per cent

- 220,088 unique victims and 82,280 alleged offenders

- Family violence order breaches 8,338, up 26 per cent
