Vic councillor booted over Facebook post

The deputy mayor of a Melbourne council has been sacked a week after he wrote derogatory comments on Facebook about a Victorian government minister.

Oliver Walsh was stripped of his position as deputy mayor after City of Darebin Council voted to abolish his role.

Councillors also voted on Monday night to remove Mr Walsh's photo and any reference to his former position from their headquarters.

Last week Mr Walsh compared Local Government Minister Natalie Hutchins to the now dead Libyan dictator Muammar Gaddafi on his Facebook page in a post that said "Fat Natalie looking Gaddaffiesk today".

The comment was posted on the same day Ms Hutchins introduced a bill to state parliament to sack the Geelong council after a damning report that found mayor Darryn Lyons and some of Geelong's councillors and staff were bullying and abusive.

In terminating Mr Walsh's position, Darebin council said Mr Walsh's comment about Ms Hutchins was "completely out of step" with its strong stance against bullying and discrimination.

The council will consider bringing back the deputy mayor's role at a meeting in November.

Mr Walsh says he has apologised to Ms Hutchins and the council.

But he thinks the council acted too hastily in removing him as deputy mayor.

"I do have issues with the process last night because it was scurried," he told AAP on Tuesday.

"It's clearly not all about Oliver Walsh. If it was all about Oliver Walsh, council would have a new deputy mayor this morning."

Mr Walsh said he was no longer seeking Liberal Party preselection in the federal seat of Batman.
