For every child that drowns in Victoria, another 12 nearly die in the water.

Victorian coroner Sara Hinchey, who investigates several pool drownings deaths each year, said on Monday that even non-fatal water incidents can end in tragedy, such as permanent brain damage.

She's using the beginning of daylight saving to join the call to remind pool owners to check their pool fencing and gates in a bid to reduce drownings.
