Vic cops silent over search criticism

Victoria Police aren't commenting on a claim officers didn't properly search the Geelong house where Daniel O'Keeffe's remains were found some five years after he went missing.

Daniel's family had been looking for him since 2011, and his father found his skeletal remains underneath their Highton home in March.

An autopsy found his death wasn't suspicious.

After Daniel went missing his sister, Loren, launched a social media campaign to find her troubled brother who she believed was alive but not reaching out because of mental health issues.

Loren spoke publicly on Thursday night for the first time since her father, Des, found Daniel's remains on March 21 while cleaning an unused storage area under their house.

She was critical of some aspects of the initial police investigation in 2011.

"They told the media they conducted an extensive search (but) we want to clarify they never searched the house ... they never went beyond the lounge room," Ms O'Keeffe told Network Ten.

"They never searched Dan's bedroom, never went through his computer.

"So although Dan was known to be struggling with a mental illness it wasn't quite ... important enough for that to make him a priority for a search."

Victoria Police on Friday declined to comment on Loren's claims.

"As the matter is before the coroner it is inappropriate for us to comment," a police spokesman told AAP.
