Vic coalition pledges cancer package

An extra $137 million will be pumped into the fight against cancer under a re-elected Victorian coalition.

The government will maintain its present investment in the Victorian Cancer Agency for research, but will invest extra funds to battle cancer if it regains power on November 29.

The extra money for cancer support services will go towards prevention, early intervention, better diagnosis, education, treatment and research.

"This is a very comprehensive cancer package, a cancer package providing better support for people with cancer and their family and their support groups," Premier Denis Napthine told reporters in Geelong on Friday.

"Every year we are making significant progress. The survival rates now are significantly better than they were 10 and 20 years ago.

"That's the sort of thing we want to build on and we want to work on."

Each year, there are almost 30,000 new Victorian cancer cases and more than 10,500 people die from cancer-related illness, he said.
