A Melbourne nightclub racially discriminated against Africans when it cancelled an event because of its concerns about the guests' race, a tribunal has found.

Inflation Nightclub cancelled a booking for Africa Fest in 2011 and refused services based on race, the Victorian Civil and Administrative Tribunal found on Wednesday.

Five days before the October 1 event, the club's venue manager Bill Gianoulas told event organisers the function would not go ahead "due to the fact that the majority of your patrons will be African", a witness told the tribunal.
