Victoria's Commissioner for Children and Young People Bernie Geary has retired after 40 years of service to the state's youth.

Mr Geary OAM was appointed Victoria's first Child Safety Commissioner in 2005, after serving on the state's Youth Parole board for 17 years.

"A strong, independent voice for children and young people, Bernie has been a fearless and passionate advocate for their interests and improving the services provided to them for more than 40 years," Children's Minister Jenny Mikakos said on Tuesday.
