After a week of mild conditions, Victorians will be reminded it's still winter as a cold snap sends temperatures plummeting during the weekend.

The Bureau of Meteorology is warning that wild winds will blast the state from Thursday night before a cold weekend snap hits.

Senior forecaster Rod Dickson said Friday would be mild and windy but maximum temperatures at the weekend would drop to 10C.

"A cold front is on its way and it will move across the state on Thursday night and will bring windy conditions on Friday," he told AAP.

He said alpine areas would be windiest, with gusts up to 100km/h expected in higher areas, while Melbourne could expect gusts of up to 80km/h.

The SES is warning people to move vehicles under cover or away from trees and secure loose items around homes, yards and balconies.
