Vic beachgoers warned not to feed seals

It's fishy business feeding seals in Victoria - and illegal.

After reports of people getting too close, authorities say beachgoers feeding fur seals have to stop before someone gets hurt.

Senior wildlife officer Samantha Moore says human interaction can cause seals to become dependent and aggressive.

"Seals are wild, fast and strong animals and may be carrying infectious diseases that can be passed on to people and dogs," Ms Moore said in a statement on Tuesday.

"Seals often rest on beaches and will eventually move on, but only if people leave them alone and don't encourage them to stay by feeding them."

The maximum fine for feeding the animals is $2887.
