Vic Arrium job losses not imminent

Victoria's 900 Arrium Steel workers do not face imminent job losses as the company goes into voluntary administration.

The state government says it has been talking with the company, administrator, union and Australian Steel Institute about the news, and has been advised the company will continue to operate.

About 900 Victorians are employed at Arrium's operations in Laverton North, Scoresby, Lyndhurst, Port Melbourne and Geelong.

The governments of NSW and Queensland, where Arrium has manufacturing sites, have also spoken to the administrator and are confident there will be no job losses.

NSW Minister for Industry, Resources and Energy, Anthony Roberts says administrator Grant Thornton must be given time to review the operation of the company.

"The administrator has advised there will be no job losses and the company will continue to operate," Mr Roberts said.

Queensland treasurer Curtis Pitt said he supported the administrator's aim to allow Arrium to trade out of its difficulties.
