Vandals destroy Melbourne students' mural

Students at a Melbourne school have spent months painting a colourful mural to brighten up a dingy bridge only for two disgruntled people to paint over it.

The mural was commissioned by VicRoads and students from Coburg Senior High School went to work transforming the underpass, under Bell Street bridge in Coburg, into a rainbow patchwork over several months.

But on Tuesday two people armed with a can of grey paint destroyed the work, completely covering the 45-metre mural.

VicRoads said the work was part of a graffiti removal program aimed at empowering schools and students to tackle graffiti in their communities.

"VicRoads is extremely disappointed by the actions of those who vandalised the mural on VicRoads property under Bell Street bridge," VicRoads said in a statement.

The incident has been reported to police and VicRoads say they will provide the school with more paint so the mural can be re-done.
