Vic govt hopeful of paramedic resolution

A long-running pay dispute between paramedics and the Victorian government could soon be over.

The Ambulance Employees Association has called for a meeting with the state government to discuss the latest revised pay offer made by the coalition on Wednesday.

Health Minister David Davis says he is hopeful for a resolution by Friday, before the government moves into caretaker mode ahead of the November 29 election.

But he has refused to say if the union will be granted a meeting.

"I can't answer that directly," he told reporters on Thursday.

"I know that documents have been exchanged so we will see what develops.

"I am ever hopeful but understand that some in the union would prefer never to settle when there's an election in the offing for them."

Union secretary Steve McGhie said representatives hoped to meet Ambulance Victoria and government officials on Thursday or Friday to settle outstanding issues.

Matters of contention include a finishing date for the agreement, government support for the paramedics' work value case before the Fair Work Commission, and the restructuring of administrative and clerical roles.

"This change is overdue and we welcome the government's new offer, but as presented by Mr Davis it still does not address every outstanding issue," Mr McGhie said.

"Let's have the meeting and sort it out."

Premier Denis Napthine says the government is "positively optimistic" about reaching a deal.

"That's up to the ambulance union but this is a very, very fair and reasonable offer," he said.

The current proposal would give paramedics a $3000 sign-on bonus and pay rises of six, three and three per cent a year over three years.

A proposal that would have paramedics sent to relieve regional areas for up to a month at their own expense has been scrapped.
