Union report damning: Vic Oppn

The Victorian opposition says a trade union royal commission report is damning confirmation of thuggery, intimidation and lawlessness in the building and construction industry.

Premier Daniel Andrews must now decide where he stands on unions, Shadow Industrial Relations Minister Robert Clark said after the commission's interim report was released on Friday.

"Mr Andrews needs to come out and tell Victorians that he has cut the links between the ALP and the CFMEU, that he is not going to tolerate thuggishness, intimidation and lawlessness on Victorian building and construction sites," he said.

He said Mr Andrews' relationship with CFMEU state secretary John Setka had to be addressed, as did the role of former Australian Workers Union secretary Cesar Melhem's role as a Labor Party MP.

The interim report of the Royal Commission into Trade Union Governance and Corruption was released on Friday, but Mr Andrews refused to comment.

"If we are going to pre-empt this process, you'd have to ask yourself why we are spending $100 million of taxpayers' money having this royal commission," Mr Andrews said. "Under this Labor government, if you do the wrong thing - the police will be after you and you will feel the full force of the law."
