Separate fires destroy two Vic homes

Two Melbourne homes have been badly damaged in separate fires, one which started in a car inside a garage.

Crews were called to a three-storey Endeavour Hills property, in the city's outer southeast, about 1.45pm on Thursday.

Authorities said the residents had driven into the garage, where the vehicle caught alight. The flames gutted the room and spread quickly to the first and second floors.

They managed to escape and no-one was injured but the roof and top storey collapsed.

Firefighters had trouble accessing the home because there were shutters on the windows.

Another blaze engulfed a single-storey brick home in Heidelberg West about 7pm.

A 25-year-old man was treated for minor smoke inhalation and taken to hospital for observation, while fire crews dealt with asbestos at the site.

A Metropolitan Fire Brigade spokesman said the damage bill was more than $200,000.

The cause is under investigation.
