Two people escape damaging house fire in Melbourne

Two people have escaped a fire which tore through their home in the beach-side Melbourne suburb of Brighton.

Emergency services responded to the residence on Cochrane Street around 1.35am after a smoke alarm alerted the two people inside to the fire.

They were evacuated safely.

Crews from the Metropolitan Fire Brigade worked for nearly two hours to control the blaze, wearing breathing apparatus and using a Teleboom to douse the fire in the roof.

The blaze has caused an estimated $200,000 worth of damage to the Edwardian-style home.

Investigations into the cause of the fire are ongoing.
