Victorian anti-violence campaigner Rosie Batty has said US Republican presidential candidate Donald Trump's latest derogatory sexist comments would not be tolerated in Australia.

Ms Batty this morning praised the public for damning Mr Trump for his "negative, derogatory, outdated, unhelpful and unhealthy" comments about a woman during a 2005 interview.

"I think what's great is, that comments made by somebody who is so high profile and potentially a world leader, are out there for us to be publicly criticising and I think that we are able to hold him to account,” Ms Batty told reporters at the launch of a respectful relationships curriculum for schools.

"It certainly wouldn't be tolerated in Australia."

Ms Batty has been widely celebrated for her advocacy against family violence after son Luke was murdered by his father two and a half years ago.

Mr Trump's campaign is in damage control following the release of tapes in which he was heard making lewd remarks.
