Nuggets cause nightmare on Vic highway

A Melbourne highway has reopened 12 hours after a truck containing a million chicken nuggets crashed into a car and flipped.

The B-double truck, on its way to a McDonald's distribution centre, hit a car in the city-bound emergency stopping lane of the Hume Highway at Epping just before midnight on Thursday.

The truck crashed through the centre median barriers and flipped onto its side, before coming to rest across the northbound lanes.

The driver and his dog escaped unscathed while the stationary car wasn't occupied.

All 20 tonnes of nuggets were binned, but McDonald's have assured customers there will be no shortage of the deep-fried chicken snack.

"We're thankful there were no injuries and apologise for the inconvenience caused to commuters this morning," a spokeswoman said.

"The good news for customers is there is plenty of other stock of McNuggets and we don't expect any impact in our restaurants."

The fast-food giant said they would work with the supplier and relevant authorities to understand the cause of the crash.

Along with the precious cargo, 1400 litres of diesel spilled from the truck.

The Hume Highway was closed until just after midday, causing lengthy delays for drivers.
