Unravelled toilet paper rolls have been cleared from a Melbourne freeway just in time for peak hour.

Ribbons of the white paper covered several hundred metres of the Hume Freeway at Cragieburn after a truck carrying them lost its load before 6am on Tuesday.

The debris caused havoc for drivers, with VicRoads closing one lane and not reopening it until shortly before 5pm.

Five weeks ago, another truck carrying toilet paper tipped on to its side and caused significant delays on the Metropolitan Ring Road.
