A toddler has been airlifted to hospital after she was pulled from the waters off a popular Victorian beach.

The young girl was swimming at a beach in Rye on Christmas Day at 2pm, before getting into trouble and swallowing a lot water.

She was plucked from the water before paramedics began CPR.

They treated the girl for some time before she was airlifted to hospital, a spokesman for Ambulance Victoria said.

"She'd swallowed a fair bit of water but paramedics continued to treat her once they arrived, and she was stabilised," the spokesman old AAP.

She was flown to Royal Children's Hospital in a stable condition.

Christmas Day saw hundreds of Victorians flock to the beach as temperatures climbed past 35C.

Earlier in the day but on the opposite side of the bay, sharks were sighted at three Victorian beaches.
