Tinnie plot accused face Melbourne court

Six men accused of plotting to leave Australia by boat to fight alongside Islamic State sympathisers have faced a Melbourne court with their lawyers seeking more details of the case against them.

Murat Kaya, Kadir Kaya, Robert "Musa" Cerantonio, Paul Dacre, Antonio Granata and Shayden Thorne appeared before the Supreme Court of Victoria on Monday for a mention hearing.

The men, who have been dubbed the "tinnie terrorists" in media reports, are each charged with making preparations for incursions into foreign countries to engage in hostile activities.

Murat Kaya is accused of helping to buy a seven-metre boat that five other men were allegedly planning to use to leave Australia so they could join jihadist group Abu Sayyaf in the southern Philippines.

Kaya's younger brother, Kadir, was arrested alongside Cerantonio, Dacre, Granata and Thorne near Cairns in May 2016 while towing a boat to Cape York.

The group had been under surveillance by the Australian Federal Police for several months before being intercepted.

Murat Kaya was arrested days later in Victoria during counter-terrorism raids.

On Monday, the men's team of lawyers requested detailed access to crown materials including listening device recordings, electronic communications and internet activity, in order to formulate a response.

The men are expected back in court on October 4 with their trial due to start in 2018.
