Three businesses and their directors have been charged over a Melbourne construction site that collapsed and forced nearby residents to flee.

The former petrol station site was being turned into a medical and childcare centre with a double-storey underground car park when a large section of a 15-metre-deep pit collapsed in July 2015.

On Monday, WorkSafe announced it had laid charges against the three companies and the three directors over the collapse.
