Co-accused Joshua Horton, 18, was charged with killing Maaka Hakiwai, 17, during the altercation. A 17-year-old, who cannot be named for legal reasons, was also charged over the attack.

Maaka died in hospital, while his 18-year-old brother Nathaniel Hakiwai was seriously injured.

Kur was charged with robbing Nathaniel Hakiwai of a Philadelphia 76ers cap worth $50 and having an offensive "edged weapon" on him.

He appeared via video link on Friday and will next appear at court in April for a committal mention with his co-accused.
