The issues behind Melbourne's tram strike

WHAT ARE THE ISSUES:

* Rail, Tram and Bus Union wants an 18 per cent wage increase over three years, and have rejected an offer of a 15 per cent increase from Yarra Trams

* RTBU also rejected additional one per cent in exchange for a 14 day roster

* Union says they are happy to accept a smaller increase, but will not move on improved conditions for workers

* Yarra Trams is proposing shorter shifts, from eight hours to six.

WHAT IS AGREED:

* A new trauma leave clause

* Extended carers leave

WHO IS AFFECTED:

* As many as 200,000 commuters are believed to have been affected by the tram strikes

* Trams stopped operating between 10am and 2pm on Thursday

* Delays began from 8.30am and workers weren't back until after 4pm

* Train strikes are scheduled for the same 10am to 2pm period on September 4

WHAT IS NEXT:

* Negotiations between RTBU members and Yarra Trams have been ongoing on Friday

* Metro Trains staff are preparing for their strike
