Tas fire smoke blankets Melbourne city

Early birds in Melbourne will have woken up to a hazy morning with smoke from Tasmanian bushfires blanketing the city.

As firefighters continue to battle dozens of fires across Tasmania, very thick smoke which resulted in almost zero visibility in the state wafted into metro Melbourne late afternoon on Monday.

The Bureau of Meteorology's senior forecaster Stephen King said despite visibility being down to 5km overnight, the smoke had begun to dissipate at dawn.
